So you’re ready to take your social media to the next level and you’ve made the “great” decision to work with a social media manager—SMM. But you have no idea where to start or what to even look for.
These are 5 things you should definitely consider on your search:
Find someone who you align with and can see yourself working with regularly. A good SMM will be a partner and will want to understand your business well. They’ll become your voice on your platforms, therefore, you need to ensure it’s someone you are confident about enough to allow them to represent your brand.
A responsible SMM will be upfront about what they can and can’t do for you. And vice versa, you should be clear about your goals so they can let you know if they are attainable. Beware of anyone promising insane growth because that’s not likely and please don’t expect your SSM to be solely responsible for the success of your business.
A good SMM will be strategic in their content planning. They should ask about your business goals and work with you to include them and support them in their content strategy. This should happen regularly, not just at the beginning of your working relationship.
Design + photography skills
While a SMM does not have to be designer or photographer, you do want to find someone who is familiar with both processes and has a good eye for aesthetics. If you find an SMM who offers both services and can do them both well, treasure them because these are invaluable skills for your social media success. Not to mention the fact that they’ll save you time and energy from not having to outsource those services.
Finding someone with all the above qualifications will come at a price, as do most valuable investments. Be wary of someone who is too good to be true price-wise because this may indicate that they are inexperienced or not fully invested in becoming a partner.
